PMY’s first impression: We’ve been hugely impressed with Lancia Aprea’s handcrafted yachts since they first appeared on the docks at Cannes a few years ago. This year, the Sorrento, Italy-based company upped the ante for the American Market with the appearance of a new 42 and a 52 at the Newport Boat Show. Unlike earlier inboard and IPS-driven models we’ve seen, this pair are powered by an array of Mercury outboards—a trio of 425-horsepower V10s behind the 42 and quad 600-horsepower V12’s behind the 52. The 42 should see speeds over 43 knots while the 60 should run north of 52. Lancia Aprea is a sixth-generation Italian boatbuilder and everything they do is custom. At Newport, we were further wowed by the quality of the fabric and interiors by Loro Piana and the woodworking—with intricate inlays and gleaming trim in mahogany and teak. As the builder says: “This is all done by multi-generational craftsmen in Italy. This is a dying art, and we are doing our best to keep it alive.”
