Hinckley Dasher Debut

Discover The Hinckley Company's ground-breaking, electric-powered Dasher at her debut at the 2017 Newport International Boat Show.

The fully electric Hinckley has arrived

One of the stars of the Newport International Boat Show was draped in a covering at Bowen’s Wharf—until it wasn’t. Letting the cover fall away, as a packed crowd of journalists and slightly mystified lunch-goers at 22 Bowen’s looked on in rapt attention, Hinckley Yachts unveiled Dasher—a fully electric boat.

Borrowing her name from the game-changing, original Picnic Boat Hull No. 1, Dasher sports a carbon-epoxy composite hull shape designed by Michael Peters. From 3D-printed console details and a single touch screen control, no amount of technological sophistication has been spared. Dasher powers her 28 feet 6 inches with twin 80 horsepower Torqeedo motors and dual 40-kWh BMW i3 lithium ion batteries. A silent driving experience is augmented by standard on-board dual 50 amp charging cables, gaining a full charge in under four hours—twice as fast the most popular plug-in electric cars.

“We didn’t do an electric boat for the sake of an electric boat; we knew the experience was going to be supported really well by the technology,” said Scott Bryant, director of new product development at Hinckley. “We have a really sophisticated product development strategy. As a technology company wrapped in beautiful boats, it’s something we’re always looking to do—we’re always thinking about the next thing.”

For the sake of simplicity, Dasher has a single touch screen that incorporates easy-to-use navigation: circles that show the batteries’ range at any given time. With a cruising speed around 8 knots (with fast cruising at 15-25 knots), her range is 40 miles when cruising and 20 to 25 miles at fast cruising speeds, making her an ideal day boat.

Reservations are now being accepted for delivery in Summer 2018.

A vintage-style illustration split into two contrasting scenes. On the left, a teenage boy looks down into a tiny, open 13-foot wooden motorboat filled with supplies. On the right, a massive steel-hulled naval warship cruises past under a dramatic sky.

A Boy and a Boat

In 1957, teenager Tom Ireland set out on a 1,500-mile journey from Long Island to Miami aboard a 13-foot Speedliner with a 25-hp outboard. What happened next even Mark Twain couldn’t make up.

A side profile shot of a modern, white Sunseeker 82 Ocean luxury motor yacht cruising at speed across open water. The vessel features striking black-tinted window bands along its multi-deck hull and a black hardtop structure over its upper deck flybridge. It kicks up a substantial white spray and wake as it glides under a soft pink, purple, and gold sunset sky, with a British Red Ensign flag flying from the stern.

Sunseeker 82 Ocean

It may be a cliché, but the second hull in the British builder’s acclaimed Ocean line is a small superyacht with more social spaces than you can count.

An aerial, high-angle three-quarter shot of a white center-console power catamaran cruising through green water, leaving a foaming white wake behind its twin hulls. Two men are on board, with the driver at the helm station beneath a black T-top canopy. The boat features tan upholstered seating, including an open bow lounge area and a rear-facing cockpit bench. The aft deck is finished with a light brown faux-teak swim platform extension flanking twin black outboard engines.

Volare Artemis 23

A scrappy start-up in South Carolina set out to build an electric boat that—they hope—can go the distance.

A low-angle, three-quarter view from the water looking up at a white Invictus ST55 luxury motor yacht idling on calm blue seas. A couple sits relaxing on the spacious aft sunpad deck outside the enclosed main cabin, which features dark tinted windows and black radar domes on the roof. The yacht's modern design includes a fold-down bulwark terrace extended on the starboard side just above the waterline, set against a bright blue sky filled with fluffy white clouds.

A decade after Invictus came onto the global scene, the Italian boatbuilder is really hitting its stride.
