Boat of Prey

A beautiful day in Sag Harbor proves that the Wajer 38 is a dayboat to be feared—and respected.

New York’s Sag Harbor is a veritable Who’s Who of yacht owners. A place where enormous Ferrettis trade wakes with immaculately restored classics and stunning super yachts alike, it’s a hard place to stand out from the crowd. If any boat is up to the challenge it’s the Dutch-built Wajer 38 Osprey. Like the bird of prey it’s named after this boat looks mean—like she’ll destroy any wake that dare appear beneath her.

Indeed many heads were turned as our test 38, with intense lime green upholstery flew out of the channel at 41-plus knots.

What impressed me more than the speed, of which there was plenty, and the impressive handling (another attribute that lives up the Osprey moniker), was how quiet the boat was. Even at WOT, the high windshield buffeted any noise from the wind, and the well-insulated engine room produced nary a peep even when tied up at the slip.

Wajer bills the 38 as the ultimate day boat. After running her every which way on a summer day in Long Island, I can’t argue with them.

Fast, stylish, and addictively fun to drive, this boat may look like a spaceship straight out of Star Wars, but at heart it might just be the ultimate dayboat.
