Birth of a Destination Gallery

Laurence Provost kneels on the sofa, her fingers wrapped delicately yet deliberately over its back edge. The French charter broker peers intently out the Azimut 74's port-side saloon window. Dark, unyielding clouds hover over the towering mountains of southeastern Brazil. There are 365 islands here, each one ringed with rain-drenched beaches. There are so many beaches along Angre’s islands that you often have one to yourself.

Express cruisers are large yachts here. There are very few owners of 150-foot tridecks.

Charming dinghy docks sometimes lie across a pretty footbridge from local restaurants.

Ninna is well-kept with a hard-working crew who are learning the ins and outs of international charter service.

This breathtaking view is what you see from the Ilha Grande beach at Angre dos Reis.

Fishing is a favorite pastime in these islands, regardless of whether you’re onboard a sparkling new charter yacht or a local’s well-worn vessel.

When clouds and fog set in here, they tend to stay, sometimes for days.

These local tour boats ferrying hotel guests to island beaches are as colorful as those you will find in any in faraway locale, like Thailand.

Most islands are free of T-shirt shops and convenience stores, so take what you’ll need from the boat—including the suntan lotion for the kids.

A vintage, low-angle historical photograph of a military Patrol Boat River (PBR) cruising through choppy river water. The dark, camouflage-painted combat vessel features a rounded black hull with a red bottom, kicking up a white water spray from its hull. Soldiers wearing military helmets and gear are visible on board, with a crewman stationed at the helm beneath a black canvas canopy structure equipped with antennas and a radar unit. An American flag flies prominently from the stern, and a machine gun mount is positioned at the back of the vessel under an overcast sky.

Still in Service

A scenic, eye-level perspective looking down a busy historic canal waterway in Amsterdam. Long, traditional houseboats line both sides of the canal banks, some featuring lush container gardens and potted plants on their roofs. The water reflects the cloudy sky above. Dense rows of vibrant green trees frame the canal, partially shading cobblestone streets, brick townhomes, parked bicycles, and a cafe terrace on the right. In the distance, a low arched bridge spans across the water under an overcast, dramatic sky.

Country of Close Encounters

A close-up, high-angle view of the bow of a luxury motor yacht moored on calm water. The bow features highly polished, varnished mahogany wood decking with a stainless steel bow rail, a prominent chrome anchor mounted at the stem, and two braided blue dock lines stretching diagonally across the frame.

Eat. Cruise. Repeat.

A close-up, selective-focus shot of a black marine compass dial illuminated at night. Bold white numbers indicate bearings for 300, 330, and 0 (North), with a yellow arrow symbol pointing toward the North marker beneath a bright reflection on the glass.
