Rough Road, Smooth Ride Gallery

My notebook was almost full. Cannes does that. Not being in films, I hardly ever visit the town except at boat-show time, in September. In the last few years, the show has gotten bigger, more international, and more important than ever. Boatyards from all over Europe are increasingly seeing it as the crucial launch platform for new models. For a photojournalist like me, that means bouts of

Choppy seas off Cap Ferrat, France.

Arriving in Monaco harbor.

Big windows make the Navetta’s saloon and dining area bright and welcoming.

Even the excellent galley gets a big window.

The huge VIP stateroom rivals that of the owner, but the other guest cabins are also a generous size. Note also the size of the ports.

A front-angle shot of a white Silent Yachts solar-electric catamaran docked at a marina, showcasing its wide multihull bow and solar panel array stretching across the upper decks.

High Voltage. High seas.

A vintage-style illustration split into two contrasting scenes. On the left, a teenage boy looks down into a tiny, open 13-foot wooden motorboat filled with supplies. On the right, a massive steel-hulled naval warship cruises past under a dramatic sky.

A Boy and a Boat

A side profile shot of a modern, white Sunseeker 82 Ocean luxury motor yacht cruising at speed across open water. The vessel features striking black-tinted window bands along its multi-deck hull and a black hardtop structure over its upper deck flybridge. It kicks up a substantial white spray and wake as it glides under a soft pink, purple, and gold sunset sky, with a British Red Ensign flag flying from the stern.

Sunseeker 82 Ocean

A medium shot from inside an enclosed boat helm station featuring a smiling, bearded man sitting at the steering wheel. He is looking off to the right, wearing blue-mirrored sunglasses, a blue baseball cap underneath a grey beanie, and a hooded blue digital-camouflage jacket. Large glass windows and an overhead skylight panel surround the cabin, offering a view out over choppy water toward a distant, tree-lined shoreline under a bright sky.
