If you really want to know what's going on inside your engine, you need to know about oil analysis. In the surfeit of CSI programs so popular with TV viewers these days, one scene is never absent: The investigators lock eyes with the suspect in the interrogation room and coolly announce that blood samples taken from the crime scene

For do-it-yourselfers, this is all of the equipment needed to take an oil sample.

We ran the engine until it reach operating temperature, removed the dipstick, and fed the tube down the dipstick hole.

The tube goes to the female end of the oil pump, which acts like an exhaust port. The sample bottle has a threaded cap that matches the threads on the oil pump, ensuring a tight seal.

Pulling back on the plunger sucks the oil from the engine directly into the sample bottle. The bottle should be filled not quite to the top.

We then removed, capped, and labeled the bottle.

A close-up, side-profile shot of a woman cleaning the white vinyl upholstery of a boat seat. She is wearing a teal t-shirt featuring a ship's wheel logo with the word "NAUTICAL" printed beneath it, as well as dangling silver hoop earrings. With a focused expression, she uses a yellow microfiber cloth in one hand and a small white cleaning pad or cotton ball in the other to wipe down the armrest of a white captain's chair. The background shows the bright, sunlit interior structures and windshield frames of the boat.
